Nova Appearances Of Late

As Nova appearances begin to slow as of late, I thought I'd share my thoughts on them.

Rich Rider's appearance in the Black Order mini-series was handled well. Derek Landy's characterization seemed consistent with his past appearances and his power level was enough to take care of the Black Order single-handed.

Thumbs Up!👍

Rich's role in the first Guardians of the Galaxy (2019) series started pretty well! Donny Cates got Nova off to a strong role in the first couple of issues. The characterization wasn't off but we didn't really get to see enough to know how Cates would handle the character on a regular basis. Unfortunately, Nova got left in the background as the series went on.

Thumbs Down. 👎

Now the Guardians of the Galaxy Annual #1 was more like it!! I really enjoyed the writing and art of the Nova story in this issue! Al Ewing really got it right! Rich felt like the warrior we had seen in Annihilation and DnA's Nova series.

BIG Thumbs Up! 👍

Sam Alexander hasn't been Nova for a few months (in real time) as his helmet was taken by the Nova Corps in order to be used for research and development. His role with the Champions has been moved from super-powered hero to being the team's pilot.

During the early issues of the Champions reboot, I did like the Nova Knight version of Sam. But since that particular arc ended, Sam has been more or less useless. I hope this changes in the next two issues as the story of the Nova helmet appears to be coming to a conclusion.

Sam himself has been written consistently, though. This arc reminds me of the period when Rich Rider lost the Nova powers to Nova Omega in the original New Warriors series.

Thumbs are in the side position waiting.... 😌
